Artist/Staff Profile: Joseph Smith

Performer, CHAMPS Coach, Faculty member of ARMSTRONG COMMUNITY MUSIC SCHOOL
Joseph Smith began his violin studies at the age of 10. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance from the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin in 2007, graduating Magna Cum Laude.
An active performer in the Austin area, Joseph is a permanent member of the both the Austin Symphony since 2007, and the Austin Lyric Opera since 2005. One of these ensembles' youngest members, Joseph strives to bring a sense of youthful energy to the classical music scene in Austin. Joseph is also active in Austin's chamber music scene. Joseph performs regularly in the Salon Concerts, Inc. series with Austin Lyric Opera's resident composer Kathryn Mishell and collaborates with several principal players from the Austin Symphony. Also an avid fan of alternative music, Joseph performs regularly with the Austin Pops Orchestra, performs with bands in local music festivals such as South by Southwest, and performs yearly with such touring artists as Josh Groban and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Joseph also served as Principal Second of the National Repertory Orchestra in 2007 and has attended many others, including the International Festival-Institute at Roundtop, and Eastern Music Festival, and has also performed with the Charlotte Symphony.
A passionate advocate of music education, Joseph is active in Austin's public music education. Joseph maintains a small private studio in Austin in addition to teaching at the Armstrong Community Music School. He is also on faculty with the Austin Chamber Music Center.
Joseph strives to bring music into the lives of children of all ages and backgrounds, while instilling a sense of appreciation for tradition and innovation for the future.
