2019-2020 CHAMPS Program

CHAMPS Education Program offers intermediate and advanced chamber music instruction and exciting performance opportunities to string players and pianists ages 12-18. Through the learning of the chamber music repertoire, CHAMPS students develop their technical skills, grow and enhance their musical understanding and communication, and learn the art of collaboration. Working in small ensembles assists with the development of listening skills, expression, artistry, leadership, social skills and helps sharpen stage presence and performing experience.

24-30 weeks of instruction, August - May

Coaching and Location:

Once a week at school either during orchestra or after school. Coaches and parents help facilitate outside of school rehearsals.

Public Masterclasses and Workshops:

Hardworking groups will be selected to perform on masterclasses given by renowned professional musicians. Upcoming masterclass clinicians this year are William Fedkenheuer of the MirĂ³ Quartet and the Thalea String Quartet who are the graduate fellowship quartet at UT.

Student recitals are January and May with additional special performance opportunities and outreach by arrangement.

Advanced groups may choose to work towards participating in regional competitions.

By audition/interview process at school. If you are interested please let your orchestra director know.

CHAMPS academy

Outside of school accelerated chamber music study. Have you fallen in love with chamber music and want to go further? Do you want to play with students from other schools? Does forming a dedicated string quartet sound like a blast? Then the CHAMPS Academy is for you!

Once groups are formed they are matched with a coach to determine a schedule. Students rehearse together outside of coachings and get the chance to move at a faster pace while learning more repertoire. Only well matched groups will be formed. Playing level, personality compatibility, grade level and location will help determine group formation. If interested in playing in an advanced chamber music group contact Leah Nelson. Please include your instrument, school and current private teacher. Pianists who are interested in playing chamber music and are already playing at an advanced level are welcome to apply!
